The internet offers limitless opportunities for learning, communication, creativity, and technological advancement. At the same time, to avoid various risks, it is essential to understand how to use it safely. Safe internet use is particularly critical for teenagers, as they spend a significant amount of time online. While they quickly adapt to new platforms, they are not always able to properly assess potential risks.

This week in February is dedicated to Safer Internet awareness, and the Georgian Banking Association once again reminds you of the basic principles of cybersecurity.

What risks are associated with internet use?

Fake offers, identity theft and personal data harvesting (including phishing), online fraud, the spread of viruses and malicious software to internet-connected devices, and cyberbullying (harassment through aggressive comments and messages online). Addressing these risks and threats requires joint efforts from teenagers, their parents, and educational institutions.

Recommendations for Parents

Speak openly about cyberspace and share information about online risks with your teenager.
Set clear boundaries — define acceptable behavior and screen time limits.
Be aware of where your teenager is, both physically and virtually.
Use technology tools such as Parental Controls (location tracking, screen time management, age-appropriate applications, etc.).
Create a “trusted circle” — agree in advance on what actions to take in case of online threats.
Be a role model — use social media safely and in moderation.

Recommendations for Educational Institutions

Integrate digital safety topics into the learning process wherever possible.
Identify and address cyberbullying promptly and take immediate action to stop it.
Establish a safe and/or anonymous channel for reporting cyberbullying.
Inform parents promptly about any incidents.

Recommendations for Teenagers

Do not accept friend requests from strangers on social media.
Do not share personal information (address, passwords, PIN codes, photos/videos, gaming passwords, card numbers, etc.).
Learn and manage your social media privacy settings.
Do not publicly share your location or personal details on social media.
Use strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all accounts.
Download games to your gaming console only from official sources.
Have a “trusted circle” — know whom to contact in case of an online threat.

Remember: every digital activity leaves a footprint.
Build and manage your digital profile wisely and responsibly.
Never blindly click on unknown links or enter your online banking or card details.
Never share personal, financial, or card-related information.
Do not post information online that could harm your or others’ reputation or financial well-being if disclosed.
Be mindful of the information you share with AI programs — remember the previous rule.
